What is Modeling?

  • Using your child’s system to talk with your child.

  • Point to pictures while you are talking.

  • Do not expect your child to use their system while you are modeling.

How do we Model?

  • Model 1-2 words beyond your child’s current language output level.

  • Model at a slow enough rate for your child to see the picture/icon.

  • Point and pair with your own speech.

  • Not every word you say will need to be pointed to on the system. Keep it simple.

  • Give your child time to process and understand the message that you have communicated.
