Home Behavior Tips: An Overview
Make a Schedule
Schedules are helpful for you and your child to know what to expect.
Do your best to mirror your child’s school schedule. Use pictures or words.
Be consistent, but allow for flexibility.
Use timers. Timers create predictability and help your child know how much time is left.
Set Expectations
Create a visual of 3-5 expectations for learning. Use pictures or words.
Expectations should state the behaviors we want to see. Example: nice hands, calm body, listen, do work.
Review expectations before each activity and when you child is having a challenging time.
Utilize Token Economies for Reinforcement
Offer frequent opportunities for reinforcers/rewards. Only provide reinforcers/reward options that you have immediate access to.
Keep it simple! Use a token chart or first/then visual.
Token charts can have 3-5 tokens for each reward. First/then shows what reinforcer/reward they will get after completing the task.
Provide Wait Time
This is hard! Give your child time to respond.
When frustrated or upset, give wait time before reengaging with the original expectation.
