Purpose & Benefits of Self-Regulation

  • Gain skills in the area of self-regulation (ex. self-control, impulse control).

  • Finding the best state of alertness for the body and emotions in a specific situation.

  • Benefits: Better management of feelings, perspective-taking, and problem-solving.

      • Early Elementary: Recognize and label emotions. Demonstrate impulse control.

      • Late Elementary: Describe emotions caused by specific situations. Express emotions appropriately.

      • Junior High: Analyze reasons for stress or ways to increase successful performance. Apply strategies to lower stress and increase performance.

Strategies

  • Throughout the day ask how your child is feeling. (If they are not able to identify a feeling, say, “It looks like you feeling ____.”)

  • Encourage your child to utilize a strategy, even if they are in the “Green Zone”.

  • Engage with your child in selected strategies.
