Tips for Supporting Reading

  • Have your child choose a book to read.

  • Have your child hold the book.

  • Let your child take a book walk: he or she can turn the pages, look through each page and talk about the pictures they see.

  • Help your child identify the following: Find the title page and identify the title of the book? Where is the front cover of the book? Where is the back cover of the book?

  • Turn to a page in the book, ask your child where is the picture on the page? where are the words on the page?

  • Read the story to/with your child.

  • Support student discussion about the book by asking questions. If they have a core board/communication device help model and elicit comments using their mode of communication.

  • Read through the book again to check for understanding by asking some of the comprehension questions listed below.
