Tips for Supporting Reading
Have your child choose a book to read.
Have your child hold the book.
Let your child take a book walk: he or she can turn the pages, look through each page and talk about the pictures they see.
Help your child identify the following: Find the title page and identify the title of the book? Where is the front cover of the book? Where is the back cover of the book?
Turn to a page in the book, ask your child where is the picture on the page? where are the words on the page?
Read the story to/with your child.
Support student discussion about the book by asking questions. If they have a core board/communication device help model and elicit comments using their mode of communication.
Read through the book again to check for understanding by asking some of the comprehension questions listed below.
Questions to ask while reading
Who is in the story? What are the characters?
What happens in the story?
Where are they? What is the setting?
What does he/she do?
How does he/she feel?
What is (character’s) problem?
How does (character) solve their problem?
Where are the words?
Where are the pictures?
Show me the front & back.
Show me the title page.
Who writes the words?
Who takes/draws the pictures?
Point to the heading. What will we read about in this section?
Why did the author write this?
