Race Report Day 2 – Classic
The second day of racing in Pinedale took place on the same course as the day before for both Varsity and JV. The trail was set with two firm classic tracks, creating an excellent racing surface. With the course featuring several steeper climbs as well as long stretches of relatively flat terrain, proper ski waxing was critical—skis needed to provide enough kick on the climbs while still offering strong glide for the fast double-pole sections.
Unfortunately, the team was not as ready to race today as they had been yesterday. Kayley had to stay back at the hotel and was unable to compete, while several other athletes battled a stomach bug throughout the morning.
The Varsity boys finished 4th overall, with every athlete scoring team points. On the Varsity girls’ side, Macey and Brynn both scored, but it was not enough to move the team out of last place in the overall standings.
Noteworthy mentions:
Gabe Aasby improved from 22nd place last year to 11th this year.
Andre Wei moved up from 50th last year to 19th this year.
Eric Venn improved from 51st last year to 27th this year.
Colton Stutte completed his very first Varsity race.
Today’s race highlighted the need for the team to spend more time practicing classic skiing. For some athletes, this was only their second time on classic skis this season. Hopefully, our snow situation at home will allow us to set and keep quality classic tracks over the next few weeks. Despite the challenges, I am very proud of this team—there is a strong sense of unity among the athletes and a positive atmosphere that makes this group a joy to work with. The entire team represents Sheridan extremely well when traveling and competing away from home.
