We finally Did It!
After three years of growth and hard work, we finally have a Sheridan athlete standing on top of the podium in a Wyoming high school race! With a commanding lead of 44 seconds, Kayley Alicke won the 7.5km freestyle race today in 22 minutes and 33 seconds.
The race featured a new wave-start format, with groups of eight athletes starting together. This format strikes a great balance between individual and mass starts. In individual starts, skiers race against the clock without knowing how they compare to others during the race. Conversely, mass starts allow all skiers to begin together, making it easier to track placing but challenging for athletes starting further back to overtake others on narrow trails. Today's format addressed these issues by sending the eight fastest-ranked skiers in the first wave, followed by subsequent groups every 30 seconds. Kayley, seeded in the first wave, led from start to finish.
On the varsity boys' side, Sheridan favorite SeanKyle Taylor had to sit out the race. Gabe Aasby was Sheridan's top finisher, securing 11th place, 2:15 behind the winning time of 19:20. Justin McDowell and Henry Phillips followed closely, finishing 15th and 16th, respectively.
In the JV boys' 5km freestyle race, we celebrated two podium finishes: Will Dominguez took 2nd place, and Luke Schreiber finished 3rd overall. Both athletes are freshmen, and we are incredibly proud of their achievements.
The team celebrated several other individual milestones:
Colton Stutte, who completed his very first ski race!
Logan Zuhlsdorf, freshmen Isabelle LaBounty, Cloie Wilson, and Logan Marshall, who have already participated in their second competition event and held their own.
Andre Wei, who completed his first race on the varsity team as a freshman.
This race took place during the high school winter break, and 17 out of 26 athletes from our team participated in Pinedale.
