Due to a lack of snow, the Cody race was relocated to Casper. A 2.5 km loop in the meadow on the Trail Creek property served as the race course for the 5 km event. All athletes, both Varsity and JV, raced two laps.
Jackson arrived strong for the event. Racing on their home course—and with several athletes who do not typically compete in high school races—they won both the boys’ and girls’ Varsity events. The boys’ race winner was Everett Roberson, an outstanding skier from Kelly Walsh, currently ranked 9th in the U.S. U18 category and recently signed to the Michigan State University NCAA ski team. Second place went to Darin Binning of Pinedale, another senior and accomplished skier. The next four places were claimed by Jackson athletes. Seniors Austin Thomas (Kelly Walsh) and Braden Bosco (Natrona) finished 7th and 8th, respectively.
For Sheridan, sophomore Kade Shideman led the way with a 9th-place overall finish. Considering the level of competition and the demanding training week leading into the race, this was an outstanding result. Kade’s lap splits were very even, and he was able to jump-skate up the final incline at the end of the race. We are very proud of his performance. Abe Hughes finished second for Sheridan in 11th place overall. Abe has traditionally excelled in classic races, so seeing him place so highly in a skate race was especially encouraging. Gabe Aasby finished 18th overall with a solid performance. While this was not his strongest day, he remains one of our most reliable and important scorers. Luke Schreiber and Andrew Wei also scored for Sheridan, finishing 26th and 29th, respectively. Eric Venn was our final Varsity finisher.
The Varsity girls’ race was won by Olivia Tolson from Pinedale with an impressive 28s lead on Kayley. Tirzah Ellis from Jackson finished 2nd on her home course leading the Jackson team to the overall win of the day. Sheridan’s scoring athletes were Kayley Alicke (3rd overall), Macey Alicke (7th), and Brynn Kirol (21st). Kayley and Macey were intentionally started farther back in the field to challenge them to practice passing skiers. For Macey, this strategy cost her a few finishing places when an athlete ahead of her snowplowed slowly through a fast, technical corner, forcing Macey into deeper snow where she crashed. Brynn lost three places after stumbling and crashing just a few feet before the finish line. Clara Murray and Ella Walton rounded out the Sheridan Varsity girls team.
Several of our JV boys are currently dealing with a seasonal respiratory illness. As a result, Conner Gunderson did not start, Colton Stutte completed only one lap, and Wyatt Balius was instructed to ski intentionally conservatively on his first lap. Despite this, Wyatt recorded the fastest time for Sheridan among the JV athletes, followed by Sean Olson, Elijah Ruble, and Edward Gnehm.
