Stuck on Klister 🤪
This week has been both fun and bittersweet. Fun, because we focused on enjoying each other’s company—we skipped ski waxing, truly sat down for a team meal, and reminded ourselves that in Cody, the experience matters more than the results. Bittersweet, because it’s our last week together as a full team. Starting next week, our sole focus shifts to preparing the Varsity team for the State Championship.
Cody hosted a 5K Classic ski race today. The course was relatively flat, with a handful of short herringbone-style climbs. Over the past 10 days, Cody received three feet of snow, making Pahaska Tepee look absolutely stunning. When we arrived from freezing Sheridan, the temperatures were pleasantly warm, and the snow measured 21°F. It was snowing, and the air felt moist.
We initially waxed with Red Toko, which typically works well at this temperature, but it provided no kick. After testing different waxes, I (Coach A) decided to try klister. My test went extremely well, so we began waxing skis with klister. Unfortunately, the conditions changed just enough between my last wax test and the first race 20 minutes later. The klister started to freeze up, collecting large clumps of snow and ice beneath everyone’s skis. Some athletes even fell forward when their skis got stuck in the snow. We ended up abandoning klister for some of the athletes but most of them raced with sub-optimal skis today.
Luckily, we had put no expectations on this race, and we had trained heavily leading up to it, so the athletes were already tired and sore. Despite these challenges, the team still had strong results.
Abe had his best race of the season, placing 7th in a stacked Varsity field. Kayley secured 4th overall despite all the obstacles. SeanKyle’s ski binding came completely off after his kick zone iced over, causing him to stumble forward, yet he still finished a respectable 25th. Ella Walton earned an All-State point for the first time.
