June 8th-12th: Theme - The Great Outdoors
These are some suggested online/offline activities to keep the children working. They are optional and they do not all have to be completed as we do not wish to add further stress to family life during these unprecedented times.
There is an option to email a picture of work or send an email about work completed to the teacher on a Friday only if you wish. You can tell us about what activities you enjoyed.
Children acquire new knowledge and skills through active learning. The following activities are based on active learning.
Maths
see video above on how to measure a pencil correctly using non standard units.
Measures
Activity 1 - estimate, compare, measure and record length using non standard units of length
A non standard unit can be anything from a copy book, a stick, a wooden spoon, a lollipop stick, a straw , a paper clip etc
. Using a non standard unit of your choice measure and record
the distance from your front door to the gate/boundry of your home
the distance from your back door to your front door
the length of your kitchen table
the length of your car or bicycle/scooter
the length of a watering can
the length of a shovel/spade
Activity 2- estimate measure and record length using metre and centimetre
revision- nb there are 100 centimetres in a metre
see activity worksheet below
Activity 3- Maths outdoors
Provide equipment that encourages children to take part in scoring games. Clipboards, whiteboards or chalks could be provided for the children to keep score using numerals, tallies or by developing their own system to represent the different scores.
• Skittles - score a point for each skittle knocked down.
• Draw targets on a wall with chalk, or stick targets onto a wall. Children throw a beanbag (rolled up socks or a small ball)and hit the target to score.
• Place different-sized hoops on the ground, along with some beanbags for the children to throw. Score points for each beanbag that lands in a hoop.
• Hang hoops from the washing line as targets to throw beanbags through.
• Different-sized buckets make great targets for beanbags or small balls.
Extend these activities by adding different numerals to the hoops/cones/buckets to show a different score for each one. The most difficult targets, e.g. the furthest hoop or the smallest bucket score the most points.
