These are some suggested online/offline activities to keep the children working. They are optional and they do not all have to be completed as we do not wish to add further stress to family life during these unprecedented times.
This week you can do some activities from Maths, English and Irish and you can choose one other activity from one of the following subjects: SESE, STEM, SPHE, PE, Arts and Religion.
There is an option to email a picture of work or send an email about work completed to the teacher on a Friday only if you wish. You can tell us about what activities you enjoyed.
Children acquire new knowledge and skills through active learning. The following activities are based on active learning.
New Learning
Activity 1 - Selection of Containers
Make sure your child has a selection of containers that are commonly used in the home (spoon, egg, cup, glass, bowl, mug, juice/milk carton, bottle, yoghurt carton, ice-cream tube, saucepan, bucket, paddling pool, etc). Ask your child to arrange the containers from those that they think hold the least to those that they think hold the most. Use only 5 / 6 containers at any one time. Encourage your child to estimate and justify their answers.
Ask your child to check their answers. Begin with the container that the child thinks holds the least. Fill it with water/ liquid/ sand/ rice/ pasta etc. Pour its contents into the container that comes next in the row. If there is space left in the second container, the child has proved that it holds more than the first container. Continue testing each of the containers in the same manner.
Activity 2- Get Measuring
For this activity, your child will need two containers of considerably different sizes. For example, a spoon and a cup along with a basin of water/sand/liquid/pasta/rice. Ask your child to estimate how many spoonfuls of water fill the cup. Encourage your child to compare their answer with their estimate. Invite your child to find the difference between their estimate and their answer using subtraction.
Repeat the activity with different pairs of containers, for example:
Egg cup and bowl
Bowl and saucepan
Cup and teapot
Teapot and bucket
Glass and basin
Cup and milk carton
Continue with Master Your Maths (Mon-Thurs)
Revise all tables aloud with a parent or sibling and/or write them down
