These are some suggested online/offline activities to keep the children working. They are optional and they do not all have to be completed as we do not wish to add further stress to family life during these unprecedented times.
This week you can do some activities from Maths, English and Irish and you can choose one other activity from one of the following subjects: SESE, STEM, SPHE, PE, Arts and Religion.
There is an option to email a picture of work or send an email about work completed to the teacher on a Friday only if you wish. You can tell us about what activities you enjoyed.
Topic: Time
Goal: focus on sequencing time and telling time
Vocabulary: afternoon, evening, morning, midnight, night, noon
Children need to be able to use the above vocabulary to sequence the day in order.
Written activity (write into copy/on a sheet of paper):
I get up in the __________
I come home from school in the ______
________ is at 12 o’ clock at night.
_____ is at 12 o’ clock in the day.
We have our dinner in the _________.
I sleep during the ________.
I watch television in the ____________.
The meal I eat in the __________ is called breakfast.
I eat lunch in the __________.
Ensure your child understands the earliest part of the day and can sequence the day correctly until midnight (dawn, morning, noon, afternoon, evening, dusk, night, midnight). Write down the words on a piece of paper and cut them out. Mix them up and allow your child to sequence them correctly, they can also draw a picture to correspond to each word if they wish.
Talk to your child about am/pm ( Sample question to ask child: "I wake up at 9 in the morning. Would I use am or pm to describe this statement?" etc.)
Enable your child to tell the time specifically when the clock reads o’ clock or half past.
Talk about how many minutes have elapsed between what you are currently doing and your last activity (only if it has been an hour or half an hour).
Explain that there are 60 minutes in an hour and 30 minutes in half an hour. Show them the minutes on a clock, let them see what happens to the minute hand when 60 seconds pass. They need to visually see and experience time passing in order to understand the clock properly.
Always relate what you are saying about the analogue clock to the digital clock. "It’s 9 o’ clock in the morning now so my digital clock on my phone reads 09:00 ". (No need to talk about 13:00/14:00 etc until 3rd/4th.)
Continue with Master Your Maths (Mon-Thurs); Test at the back of the book (pgs. 66-95) may be completed on Friday, i.e. if you do Week 24, do Test 24. If previous tests (e.g. Test 1) have not been completed, you may complete them instead of doing the test corresponding to that week, i.e. if you do Week 24, do Test 2

Select and read your favourite myth/legend (Cu Chulainn, Fionn and the Salmon of Knowledge, Fionn and the Dragon, The Children of Lir etc).
Create a poster based on your favourite myth/legend. Be as creative as possible. You don’t have to retell the story exactly, maybe you would have preferred a different ending so adapt the story freely. Cut out pictures, draw, colour, write or type information and most importantly, have lots of fun!
Lava Lamps: You can investigate chemical energy and the properties of different materials through this interesting experiment. To make a lava lamp, pour ¼ water and ¾ oil into a plastic bottle. Then add food colouring. This doesn’t dissolve in oil. Add an Alka Selzter tablet into the bottle and observed a fantastic chemical reaction. The Alka Selzter tablet produces carbon dioxide gas when it mixes with water. These light bubbles of gas rise through the oil to the top of the bottle taking some coloured water with them. When they reach the top of the bottle, the gas escapes, and the drops of coloured water sink back down through the oil.
Banana muffins: follow step by step instructions (above)
