These are some suggested online/offline activities to keep the children working. They are optional and they do not all have to be completed as we do not wish to add further stress to family life during these unprecedented times.
This week you can do some activities from Maths, English and Irish and you can choose one other activity from one of the following subjects: SESE, STEM, SPHE, PE, Arts and Religion.
There is an option to email a picture of work or send an email about work completed to the teacher on a Friday only if you wish. You can tell us about what activities you enjoyed.
Fractions and Time
If possible, use an analogue watch or clock and digital clock to practise. If not, the children could make their own clock (on the right), use an online clock (check: Time Games) or you could draw a clock face without hands for them.
Any opportunities for looking at clocks (analogue and digital) and telling the time are great.
Fractions (Revision of halves and quarters to help with Time)
If possible, cut out a paper circle or use a circular paper plate and the children will fold it in half and then in quarters. This could also be done on paper where the child draws a circle and divides it into halves and quarters
When you fold your circle in half, how many equal parts are there?
When you fold it in quarters, how many equal parts are there?
Challenge: Imagine the circle you have folded (or drawn) in quarters is a clock, where would the 12/ 6/ 3/ 9 go? Can you fill in the rest of the numbers?
Time (Revision of o’clock and half past from last week; New Learning - Quarter past and quarter to)
Watch YouTube video
Write the following in your copy/ on a piece of paper.
Game (using a clock) – Show Me… 5 o’clock, half past 2, quarter past 3, quarter to 5; an hour later/ earlier than 4 o’clock; half an hour later/ earlier than 4 o’clock; half an hour later than quarter past 4 (You can make adapt the questions to your child’s ability)
How many minutes are in one whole hour/ half an hour/ one quarter of an hour?
If you know that there are 15 minutes in one quarter of an hour, how many are in two quarters of an hour/ three quarters of an hour?
List some activities/ events that take one hour (60 minutes)/ half an hour (30 minutes)/ a quarter of an hour (15 minutes)/ three quarters of an hour (45 minutes)
Can you think of any events/ activities during the day that begin at ‘o’clock’/ ‘half past the hour’/ ‘quarter past the hour’/ ‘quarter to the hour’? Show these on a clock.
Throughout the day, practise telling the time on a clock or watch (o’clock, half past, quarter past, quarter to)
Try worksheet (No need to print or write) – Call out answers and check afterwards using Answer Sheet (Questions Page 1 and Answers Page 2). Remember, the short hand tells us the hour and the long hand tells us the minutes.
Video 1 - Writing o’clock on the digital clock
Video 2 - Writing half past on the analogue and digital clock
Digital time (Revision of o’clock and half past digital time from last week)
Note: Children can say 5:30 (digital time) as 'half five' or 'five thirty' or 'thirty minutes past 5'.
Questions (You can write them down in a copy or a sheet of paper):
Can you find digital time in your home? Write down where you can see the digital time.
Read the analogue time (o’clock and half past) below aloud. Can you change it to digital time in your copy? Write it as: ____:____
Remember, the hour is written first and then the minutes.
Time Challenge! Can you solve this problem?
