While emails are the preferred method of communication these days, there is still a place for letter writing and it's important to know the accepted way of doing it:
- Sender's address: top right of the page (just justify to the right!!!!)
- The date: two lines below the Sender's address. (2nd of May, 2019 or 2/5/2019)
- Address of recipient: justified to the left, one line below the date.
- Greeting (or salutation, if you want to sound proper!): two lines below recipient's address.
- "Dear Lee," for informal letters to friends
- "Dear Mr di Natale / Ms di Natale," for formal letters. Use "Miss di Natale / Mrs di Natale only if you know the recipient would prefer this title.
- When writing to an organisation, it is a good idea to find the name of the best person to write to, but if you haven't managed to, you can write: "Dear Sir/Madam".
- Sometimes the recipient will have a name that could be male or female, like Chris, Kim or Viv. If you do not know the gender of the person you are writing to, don't make a guess! You probably don't want to sound too familiar either. So, just use their full name: "Dear Chris Jones".
5. Closing:
"Yours sincerely," is good for formal letters where you do not know the recipient.
"Regards," and "Kind regards," are also a little formal, but more appropriate if you already know the person or have an established connection.
"Love," is probably not appropriate for a formal letter! Use it with your friends and family.
