What is an appraisal?

An appraisal is a reflection of work done, an evaluation of learning and a summary of what worked and what didn't.

When do you use appraisals?

An appraisal is used at the end of a particular project. However, regular reflection is encouraged throughout the duration of the project.

What do you need to include in an appraisal?

In an appraisal you should ask yourself:

  • What have you learned?
  • What did you do well?
  • Where could you have improved?
  • What would you do differently next time?

Tips and hints for writing a good appraisal:

A good appraisal is written in full sentences with correct grammar and punctuation. When writing your appraisal:

  • Be honest and straight forward
  • Use language that you are comfortable with
  • Keep regular notes and take photos throughout the duration of the project
  • Refer back to initial project proposal
  • Write dot points and then expand upon them
  • Use a template to help structure your first few appraisals
  • Document peer and teacher feedback and discussions relating to your project
