Hello, I’m Rayhan Mehal, and I’m from the country of Bangladesh. I was born on the 16th of September, the 9th most popular birthday. Since we mentioned the country where I’m from, continuing on without describing the traditions and customs wouldn’t make sense. Bangladesh’s largest religion is Islam. Due to this, various traditions come from this religion. For example, on Eid-al Fitr and Eid-al Adha, two holy holidays of Islam, families gather together to celebrate. Fathers and their sons go to pray in a field or mosque designated for prayer; A special prayer is done on the morning of Eid-al Fitr and Eid-al Adha. Although women are allowed to go pray, it isn’t common. They usually pray at home. Following the prayers, gifts and money are given to children and adults exchange hugs with their family and friends. Back when everyone’s home, they eat a variety of foods for the occasion, while being dressed in clean, preferably new clothes. The rest of the day is full of visiting relatives and friends, appreciating the holiday, and praying. Moving on from this major tradition, another tradition is participating in the month of Ramadan, a holy month where it is instructed to fast from sunrise to sunset in order to practice discipline, become closer to Allah, and empathize with those who are less fortunate than us. After sunset, a meal is eaten to break the fast, known as Iftar. It is preferable to break your fast with a date. Another tradition, or more of a holiday of Bangladesh is Independence Day, which is on March 26th. After a long few months of war with West Pakistan, or known as Pakistan today, East Pakistan, known as Bangladesh today had finally seceded from West Pakistan and became its own country. This was a huge victory as the Bengalis were finally able to terminate the economic and political discrimination from the Pakistanis. There are several other traditions of Bangladesh, but the few above were key ones.
