The Christmas season and holiday break is a time when everyone gets together and enjoys one another's company. To help everyone come together and be with their family and friends after a long time apart, the Dyker Newspaper has come up with ideas for places to go for the winter break. These places include the Brooklyn Botanical Garden ‘After Dark Lightscape’, and Richmond Town Candle Light Tours.
Brooklyn Botanical Garden, Brooklyn, NY
The Brooklyn Botanical Garden now has an ‘After Dark Lightscape’. This breathtaking event features lights that accentuate the beauty of nature in the garden. Trees are lush with the twinkle of luminescence and flowers light up the fields.
A very famous part of the light show is the Winter Cathedral Tunnel. This tunnel shines so bright you could see it from miles away! It is also a great place to take a picture for your holiday card. As you walk with family and friends through the Winter Cathedral Tunnel, joy blossoms inside you when you see the bright, twinkling lights.
The Lightscape has over one million lights, poems written by Jaqueline Woodson, food stands and even a snack area to roast your own marshmallows! The Gothamist says “We're not talking a string of blinkers from your grandma's attic here—they've got "over one million dazzling lights," and it will take you a soulful hour to navigate your way through it all.” This is certainly true!
A visit to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden this winter season will sprout a feeling of holiday cheer! The Lightscape is definitely an adventure you will remember.
Tickets for this spectacular light show cost $34 for adults, $18 for children 12 and under, and free for babies age two and under.
Richmond Town, Staten Island
Richmond Town now offers a tranquil tour through history, this tour is called the Candle Light Tour. This cheerful tour will get you into the holiday spirit while also teaching you about the holidays in the nineteenth century. The Candle Light tour features the charming Guyon Lake Tyson House, the historic Basketmakers house, the fascinating Tavern, and the elegant Bennett House. There is music to soothe you, food that will surprise you, and a guaranteed good time!
As you walk through the houses that are alive with volunteers dancing around the house, eating traditional food, and showing us what it was like to gather with family and friends in the nineteenth century, you feel a sense of warmth and happiness. When you walk through the businesses you see people frantically running around trying to finish all their work before the holiday festivities begin!
You feel a sense of excitement in the air. Richmond Town Candle Light Tour also offers traditional eighteenth century food that will make your mouth sing with joy. You will get to taste olycokes (fried oil cakes) a traditional Dutch and English dessert. From the historic architecture to the beautiful feeling, Richmond Town Candle Tour is an activity all ages will enjoy.
The Candle Light Tour is $25 per person.
