If you’re looking for a book that’s about a brave, powerful, and tough girl advocating for topics that she strongly believes in. Then “Front Desk” by Kelly Yang is just right for you! Front Desk is loosely based on the author’s experience in her childhood when she immigrated to the United States. This middle grade novel is set in California in the 1990s. After immigrating to the United States for a long time with her hardworking parents. Mia Tang (The main character and the tough girl in Front Desk) and her parents finally found a job (That they thought would be stable and provide good salaries) working in a motel in California. The owner of the motel, Mr.Yao, would later try every possible way to take money away from their pay. During Mia’s time managing the front desk at the motel, she met many loyal and supportive friends, including the customers at the motel. Mia Tang isn’t shy or afraid to stand up for what’s right and what she believes in. The author, Kelly Yang, managed to present difficult problems like racism and poverty in ways that kids would easily understand. Many of the heartbreaking stories mentioned in the novel still happen in reality today for immigrants and minorities.
