A promising year turned into a nightmare for Jets QB Zach Wilson.
Both the Jets and the Giants came into the season with a question mark at quarterback. However, Big Blue has found their answer in Daniel Jones, whose season began with a slow start but has ultimately picked up pace, relieving questions about the future of the Quarterback position, of the Giants. On the other hand, Jets QB Zach Wilson’s season which began with promise, has turned into an utter failure. While The G-Men are expected to offer a contract extension to Daniel Jones this off-season, Gang Green’s Wilson may very well have signed his ticket out of town. Signaling yet another change for the Jets at the Quarterback position. This leaves an important question remaining: Who will be the Jets starting quarterback in 2023?
Wilson, the second pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, out of Brigham Young University, had high expectations coming into this year. Many expected him to break the seemingly never-ending struggles that Gang Green has faced at the position, for the past decade. However, during a preseason game Wilson suffered a knee injury that would have him missing the first 4 games of the regular season. When Wilson finally returned to action, he looked overwhelmed and was unable to complete seemingly easy passes. He posted a paltry 1,688 passing yards, 6 Touchdowns, and 7 interceptions, which puts him at the bottom of the list among qualified quarterbacks. In the words of Wilson, it looked like he was "seeing ghosts" In the second year of Wilson’s tenure as quarterback the team's early season success (record of 5-2) was not because of him, but in spite of him. His poor play, including poor decision-making and inability to read defenses, lead to his benching and fans jumping on the Mike White bandwagon.
Now that the Jets’ promising season has crashed after a 5-game losing streak, which eliminated them from playoff contention, the focus is on the team taking the next step under the Robert Saleh regime. However, while the Jets have found numerous gems, including the rookie trio of running back Breece Hall, Pro Bowl corner-back Sauce Gardner, and wide receiver Garret Wilson, the most important piece remains the quarterback. Unfortunately, many people within the Jets organization believe that the quarterback of the future is not on the current roster and many fans, would agree.
