Mental Health

By Marietta Baumblit from class 852

Mental health is something many people struggle with. About 800,000 people die from suicide per year, and a large portion of this includes students. So, even though people struggling with their mental health may think that they are alone, they aren’t. Now you may be thinking what to do about this number and what to do when you are struggling with your mental health. Here is a list of things you may do when you are struggling with your mental health or just feeling upset/hurt about something.

I. Communicate to others. (friends/family)

Even though a lot of people struggling with their mental health may believe others don’t care, and don’t want to bother them, it is always better to just talk to someone about your thoughts/feelings. However, this should be someone you trust with, such as your mom/dad, but it can also be your friend/guidance counselor.

II. Listen to music

Music will not cure your mental health struggles, but for some people it may be a distraction. Music can help one forget about their problems and can help one feel better about themselves. Additionally, something I personally relate to is listening to different music depending on my mood. For example if I am in a “depressing” mood I would listening to either sad music or happy music to cheer me up. However, this is temporary, and music can’t always fix ALL of your problems.

III. Sleep!

This may sound obvious, but sleep can really help. Some people state that sleep helps them escape their problems. However, once again this is just a temporary solution, and sleep won’t help fix all of your problems in life.

These are some things that you may do when you are feeling down. Hopefully everyone that may be struggling right now knows that they aren’t alone, and help is provided if they need it.

How to Survive Sick Season This Winter

By: Joanna Varughese

It’s that time of the year! Winter isn’t all holidays and fun, it also comes with the dreaded sick season. Coughing and sneezing is everywhere. Here are some tips to help protect you and the people around you this flu season!

  • Make sure you’re bundled up well in the cold. Temperatures in NYC can drop to 20 degrees or lower! You’re more susceptible to getting sick when your body is cold, proper jackets, gloves and thick socks are useful.

  • Have hot drinks when you’re sick, they’ll soothe your throat. Personally, tea with honey and lemon juice always helps me. Add a little black pepper and it will clear up your throat almost instantly! Hot foods like soup and stew can help a lot as well, and they’re easy to make, like potato soup with black pepper in it.

  • If someone else is sick, stay a safe distance away. If you’re sick, make sure you stay home, to not spread it to anybody else.

  • Rest well while you’re sick. Your body will have a harder time recovering if you use all your energy working, not resting.

  • Avoid putting your hands near your face, as germs can go through your mouth, nose or eyes.

  • Get the Flu shot for free! It’s good protection from the Flu. (PS: You might even get a free lollipop!)

  • Flu season can be hard, but following these tips can help you get through it.

  • Hopefully you don’t get sick, so enjoy the holidays!
