In our Second Learning for Life Boost in October, Kinder and 1st grade students learned about personal space using a fun spiderweb activity. Students explored the idea that everyone has different “bubble spaces” depending on who they are with.
Each student chose who their paper spider represented (a parent, a friend, a teacher, etc.) and placed it on the correct part of a giant spiderweb. This helped them visualize how close or far different people should be from their personal space.
This is our smallest, closest bubble.
Only trusted people with permission may enter this space.
Examples: hugs from family, high fives (if okay)
Key Reminder: “This is my body space, and I choose who comes in.”
This bubble is for people we know well, friends, classmates, and teachers.
They can come closer, but not as close as our body space.
Examples: sitting by a friend, talking with a teacher
Key Reminder: “This is my friendship space.”
This is our biggest bubble for people we don’t know very well.
We keep a larger distance to stay safe and comfortable.
Examples: in a store line, hallway with another class
Key Reminder: “This is my safety space.”
Ask your child:
“Who did your spider represent today? Which bubble did you put it in?”
This simple conversation helps reinforce boundary awareness and builds positive social skills.
