Since 1985, the Bailiwick's Sixth Form has been located at Les Varendes, as part of the Guernsey Grammar School and Sixth Form Centre. In 2005, to accommodate the increasing number of Sixth Form students, the dedicated extension (pictured) was built. Throughout this entire period, Sixth Form classes have been taught across the whole 11-18 school site. In September 2024 the school was renamed Les Varendes High School and The Sixth Form Centre.
From September 2025, The Sixth Form Centre will relocate to Cobo where it will become, for the first time, a standalone, specialist centre. We are very excited by the opportunities this move presents, as we establish a distinct academic post-16 centre for the Bailiwick, with its own unique culture and a learning environment tailored specifically for young adults.
The Sixth Form Centre is planned to relocate to a brand new, dedicated, purpose-built building on the forthcoming Post-16 campus at Les Ozouets. This will enable the Bailiwick's young adults to study together as members of a single Post-16 and adult learning community. Furthermore it will facilitate, wherever possible and desirable, a greater blend of academic and vocational studies, enabling students to pursue a wider range of pathways personalised to their individual needs and aspirations.
The Sixth Form Centre at Cobo
A significant amount of work is being undertaken to prepare for this transformation, with remodelling, refurbishing and rebranding of the current building. As these images show, our aim is for the new Sixth Form Centre to look and feel in every way a bridge between school and university or employment.
Independent learning is a key element of post-16 study. The new Sixth Form Centre will feature two generous independent learning areas: the Study Hall and the Library. Both will be core hubs within the building; well-resourced spaces where students can focus on their studies in peace and without distraction.
The Sixth Form Centre gym will be a large multifunctional space used for lessons in PE and Sport, Health & Exercise Science, for recreational clubs and activities, as a lecture and seminar space for Personal Development sessions and visiting speakers, and for examinations.
