Identifying Rhetorical Strategies
Ethos = Ethics and Credibility
The ongoing establishment of a writer’s/speaker’s authority, credibility, and believability as he/she writes.
It appeals to ethics and character. It also seeks to persuade the reader that the speaker can be trusted due to their noble character.
EXAMPLES:
Use of credible sources
Appropriate tone and language
Humility
Accurate information
Pathos = Emotions
The use of emotion and affect to persuade. Pathos appeals to the heart, one’s emotions, and seeks to persuade the reader emotionally.
EXAMPLES:
Appeal to the heart/emotion
Stories or testimonials
Personal connections
Powerful words, phrases, or images that stir up emotion
Logos = Logic
The use of logic, rationality, and critical reasoning to persuade.
Logos appeals to the mind and seeks to persuade the reader intellectually.
EXAMPLES:
Facts
Statistics
