What Is Needs & Asset Mapping?

Needs and Asset Mapping is a collaborative process that helps a Community School develop a comprehensive understanding of the strengths, resources, opportunities, needs, and barriers that exist within its school and surrounding community. Rather than focusing only on what students and families may be lacking, the process looks at the entire school-community ecosystem and asks two equally important questions: What do our students, families, staff, and community need to thrive, and what strengths and assets already exist that we can build upon? Assets can include people, programs, facilities, staff expertise, student and family knowledge, partnerships, businesses, community organizations, cultural resources, services, funding, and other opportunities available both on and beyond the school campus.

Why Do We Do It?

Understanding needs alone does not provide the full picture of a school community. Needs and Asset Mapping allows us to bring together student voice, family voice, staff voice, partner and community perspectives, and school data to better understand not only what is happening, but why it is happening and what resources may already exist to help address it. Through this process, we can identify gaps and barriers, discover resources that may be underutilized, strengthen existing programs and partnerships, and better align people, services, facilities, funding, and opportunities with the priorities identified by our community. This allows decisions to be informed by both evidence and lived experience rather than assumptions.

How Does It Support Community Schools?

Needs and Asset Mapping is foundational to the Community Schools approach because it ensures that our work is community-informed, asset-based, and developed collaboratively. The information gathered helps guide integrated student supports, family and community engagement, collaborative leadership, expanded learning opportunities, partnership development, and the alignment of resources with student and family needs. Most importantly, it recognizes that students, families, educators, partners, and community members are not simply recipients of programs or services, they bring knowledge, experience, relationships, strengths, and solutions that are essential to the success of the school community.

At its core, Needs and Asset Mapping is not about creating a list of everything a community lacks. It is about understanding the whole community, its strengths, needs, people, resources, experiences, and opportunities—and using that collective knowledge to make informed decisions and build sustainable solutions together. This reflects the heart of the Community Schools model: building not simply for the community, but with the community.
