Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) is an college elective program that helps students to achieve the necessary requirements and skills to be eligible for university acceptance. AVID’s mission is to close the opportunity gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
Regardless of their life circumstances, AVID students overcome obstacles and achieve success. They graduate and attend college at higher rates, but more importantly, they can think critically, collaborate, and set high expectations to confidently conquer the challenges that await them.
AVID students are expected to be motivated and determined to achieve university acceptance at the end of their high school career. It will be necessary for AVID students to manage their time so that school and studies become a top priority.

Effort/Citizenship in all classes.

AVID students receive tutoring within the school day. Two days a week students receive help from college tutors in subject areas where they need support. They must try to solve or answer a problem or question prior to the academic tutorial and then pinpoint and articulate where they are stuck to encourage problem solving and critical thinking.
Binder checks are to encourage and teach organization. Students are to keep a binder with all of their notes and materials for each class. Their notes, worksheets and materials should be organized by subject and easy to find. Included in their weekly binder check is the use of a planner or agenda to help with organization and time management. Their binders are checked weekly with their notes by either a teacher or AVID tutor and kids are given feedback for growth.
AVID students are required to take Cornell Notes in all of their core academic classes. They are taught the process and the key component is to summarize the material they learned in class. They then are taught how to go back over their notes so that they can use them as a study tool. They must turn in their notes weekly with their binder checks.
AVID students participate in 2 or more college field trips every year. They receive private tours and presentations of each college. In the fall, focus is given to Juniors and Seniors. In the Spring, focus is given to Freshmen and Sophomores.
Each year, AVID students are recognized among the best students at SAHS in all areas. In addition, AVID students attend the AVID Awards Night hosted by OCDE, where a AVID Senior Standout is selected and students qualify for scholarship ranging from $1,000-$20,000.
Team Building activities are really important in AVID. We promote a family atmosphere. We provide a place that they feel really connected. Students stay with the same group year to year and we encourage team building in the form of games, holiday celebrations, critical thinking activities and competitions. It is definitely more than just an academic program.
