Morning Arrival
All students are expected to be on time for school. It is best for students to arrive at school before 7:55, when doors will open. Students should be in their classrooms and ready to start their day at 8:00.
Doors #1, #2,#7, and #19 will open each morning at 7:55 (doors will close at the 8:00 bell). Children may enter through any of the open doors, but most will want to enter through the doors closest to their classrooms.
Kindergarten students will meet their teachers in the front by the birch trees each morning to come into class as a group. The picnic table area and the grassy area in front of the gym are designated gathering areas for students and their families. Supervision of this area, and safety patrol assistance, begins at 7:45. * if you are on the playground area with an older child, K students are welcome to play there too. They should plan to join their group at the birch trees when doors open.
Children in grades 1-5 may choose to wait on the playground between 7:45 and 7:55 when the bell rings; students will line up by grade to enter the building. Minimal supervision will be available outside during this time. Parents are welcome to be on the playground as well.
If your child arrives in the school building after 8:00 when the doors close, they are marked tardy for the day. Students who are tardy must come in through the front doors and check in at the front office.
Breakfast
Breakfast is served in the cafeteria from 7:40-8:00. Students who intend to eat breakfast should go to the cafeteria when they arrive at school.
Kindergarten
Kindergarten BUS students will be escorted to their busses at 2:20.
Kindergarten PEAK students will be dismissed to the cafeteria to meet the PEAK staff.
Kindergarten WALKERS are dismissed from Door #1 at 2:20. Parents or caregivers are asked to meet Kindergarten students on the blacktop near Door #1
Grades 1-5
BUS students are dismissed from their classroom to the bus beginning at 2:22. Attendance is taken for each bus as students get on.
WALKERS are students who walk home from school or students who are picked up by a parent or guardian. Walkers are dismissed at 2:27. Parents are asked to meet children outside the school. Children and parents are requested to use the crosswalks when crossing the street, even in front of the school. Students may be independent walkers (or walk without a grown up meeting them) beginning in grade 2 with parent permission.
Grade 1 is dismissed from door #2
Grade 1 students should be met by a caregiver or parent. Please plan to meet them at door #2.
Grade 2 is dismissed from door #19
Parents who have not given permission for their child to be an independent walker should meet their child on the playground.
Grades 3-5 are typically dismissed independently to the playground area.
Classrooms will use door #1 and door #19, depending on their proximity.
Please note that dismissal procedures are the same in inclement weather.
ABSENCES/TARDIES MUST BE REPORTED BY 8:00 am.
DISMISSAL CHANGES MUST BE REPORTED as soon as possible. Any changes should be entered into PickUp Patrol prior to 1:30 pm to be sure teachers are aware of the change for the day. In the event of an emergency last minute change, you may call the office at 603-436-1708, and make the change in Pick Up Patrol.
When dismissing your student early, plan to pick up before 2:00. After 2:00, the office and classrooms are busy gearing up for dismissal and you will be asked to wait until your student’s regular dismissal time. We cannot dismiss a child from their classroom until you arrive at the school.
*Please note that routine changes (ie. every Tuesday for the next 6 weeks) can be reported once, rather than each Tuesday. In addition, changes that you are aware of ahead of time can be submitted prior to the date of the change.
While children may play on the playground after school, the playground is NOT SUPERVISED by school staff after school hours. During this time the playground functions as any other public playground in Portsmouth. Parents should familiarize themselves with the school playground rules (found in this handbook) These rules are in effect on the playground at all times. The playground rules emphasize kind, safe, responsible, and respectful play. Bicycles, scooters, skateboards, sleds, etc. are not permitted on the playground until 5:30 p.m. Please note that dogs are not allowed on the playground at any time.
