Little Harbour staff integrates social and emotional learning into our communities across the school day. Through the use of a common program, Character Strong, we strive for continuity and consistency of messaging. Character Strong includes classroom lessons to build a culture of respect and acceptance among the students and staff in our community. It is a school-wide expectation that lessons/discussions take place weekly in individual classrooms.
Chacter Strong provides a framework of common expectations and language from one grade level to the next, and throughout our school. It is an evidence-based social and emotional learning (SEL) program for Kindergarten through Grade 5. Our whole-school approach includes training for all adults in the school community – teachers, administrators, counselors, and support staff– to learn how to model and reinforce prosocial skills throughout the school day and at home. Elements of this curriculum are highlighted at monthly community meetings and encouraged within the entire community for carryover too.
