8th Gr. Accurate Facial Proportions Project

Self-Portrait - Tape Resist Painting

This project piggybacks off of the torn paper self-portrait. You will:

  • apply what you have learned about self-expression in self-portraiture
  • advance beyond tracing your photo to drawing your likeness freehand
  • learn and apply the accurate proportions of the face
  • use a resist technique to mask white lines
  • paint using vibrant liquid watercolor
  • and finally, add bold patterns to the white lines.

Remember that everything you put tape on will be WHITE. Don't forget the white part of your eye, and all lines. Rip tape to get interesting textures.

Example of Drawing: Taped and Ready to Paint

This is what your paper will look like when the tape is complete, check to make sure you didn't forget anything, like the white part of your eye. You can leave the pupil blank and add Sharpie later if you would like.
