USATF Nebraska officials play a vital role in ensuring fair, safe, and professionally conducted competitions across the state. From youth meets to open, masters, and championship events, certified officials uphold the integrity of the sport.
Our officials are trained, certified, and committed to applying USATF rules consistently and professionally.
Becoming a certified USATF official allows you to:
Support the growth of track & field and running in Nebraska
Work youth, open, masters, and championship competitions
Receive education and training in USATF rules
Be eligible to officiate at regional and national events
Contribute to a safe and fair competitive environment
Many officials are former athletes, coaches, or dedicated supporters of the sport who want to stay involved in a meaningful way.
To become and remain a USATF-certified official, individuals must:
Obtain a current USATF membership
Complete a background screening (as required)
Complete Safe Sport training
Pass the appropriate rules examination
Maintain active status through continued service and education
Certification is managed through the USATF national system, with oversight at the association level.
Officials are encouraged to stay current with:
Rule updates
Certification renewals
Educational clinics and meetings
National advancement pathways
Experienced officials may pursue higher levels of certification and officiate at regional and national championships.

Mark Kostek serves as the Officials Chair for USATF Nebraska and is a member of the Association’s Board. He brings extensive leadership and officiating experience to the role, including service as the NCAA Track & Field/Cross Country Secretary-Rules Editor, a World Athletics Bronze Referee, and a member of the USATF Men’s Track & Field Executive and Rules Committee. Mark has also served as the USATF Nebraska Association Certification Chair, supporting the development and education of officials statewide.
In addition to his officiating background, Mark has held numerous leadership positions in collegiate athletics and sport administration, including Assistant Track Coach at the University of Nebraska, Head Track Coach at Midland University, Director of the Drake Relays, Associate Athletics Director at Drake University, and CEO of the Greater Des Moines Sports Commission. His breadth of experience reflects a lifelong commitment to advancing track & field and cross country at every level.
