USATF Nebraska Youth Cross Country offers competitive and developmental opportunities for young runners, typically ages 5–18, in a team-oriented and supportive environment. Youth cross country emphasizes endurance, teamwork, and personal growth while introducing athletes to lifelong fitness through running.
Whether an athlete is new to the sport or pursuing high-level competition, USATF Nebraska provides opportunities for participation and advancement.
The USATF youth cross country season generally takes place in the fall, with opportunities to compete in:
Local and association-level meets
Association championships
National Junior Olympic championship pathway
Participation in USATF-sanctioned events requires a current USATF Youth membership.
Age divisions follow USATF guidelines and are based on the athlete’s age as of December 31 of the competition year.
Age Divisions 2026:
8 & Under (2018+): 2000m
9-10 (2016-2017): 3000m
11-12 (2014-2015): 3000m
13-14 (2012-2013): 4000m
15-16* (2010-2011): 5000m
17-18* (2008-2009): 5000m
*15-16 & 17-18 run as one age division for team scoring. Medals are given in each separate age group

The Youth Secretary plays a vital role in supporting the administration and organization of USATF Nebraska Youth programs. Working closely with the Youth Chair and association leadership, the Youth Secretary helps ensure that communication, documentation, and event coordination run smoothly throughout the season.
The Youth Secretary serves as a key point of contact for clubs, coaches, and families throughout the season and helps ensure that our youth competitions are organized, efficient, and athlete-focused.
