Geography (GOG) is a subject that can be a major for BSc, BA, BJourn and BSocSc degrees. To major in Geography, you must obtain credits for EAR101, GOG102, GOG201, GOG202, GOG301 and GOG302.
The Department of Geography offers an Honours degree. Students must read four modules, submit a research project proposal, a research project, and present at least two seminars during the year. At the start of the academic year, all students will have to attend an induction programme and may include a compulsory field trip. Other field trips, which may be scheduled during a vacation, are also compulsory for several individual Honours modules and students are normally be expected to attend the annual Geography Students Conference. For all programmes, the modules offered may be subject to timetable and staffing constraints. Other appropriate modules may be taken if approved by the Head of Department. Details on the Honours programmes are in the Honours Guide.
Entry Requirements:
65 % average in 3rd -Year, with at least 65 % in Geography. Undergraduate courses must align academically with the offered honours courses.
Suitably qualified students are encouraged to proceed to the research degrees of MSc, MA, MSocSc, and PhD, under the direction of the Department's staff. The degree MSc in Water Science in the Geography Department may also be awarded. Typically, to be accepted for a Master's degree, a good Honours degree in Geography, or a cognate discipline, is required (a 2A or distinction; i.e. 70 % or higher) with strong research competency evidence. The candidates mark for their Honours Research Project is critical.
All undergraduate semester courses are examined at the end of that Semester. As outlined, each student's assessment typically comprises a theory examination, formal practical assessment, and a coursework component, made up of theory and practical marks. Additional coursework may replace the traditional practical component. Please consult RUconnected for the full breakdown of marks.
Students must check their mark record on ROSS before exams commence. No changes are possible once the exams have been completed.
What happens if I fail a course?
If you fail a course, the outcome depends on the level at which it is offered, and the sub-minima that apply. If you pass a one-semester course, but fail the other semester course in the same Year of Study with a mark that meets the sub-minimum requirements, the Head of Department may grant an Aggregated Credit (ACR) to give an average of at least 50 %. An ACR is worth the full credit value for the Year of Study but does not automatically entitle a student to continue to the next level. In this case, a Non-Continuing Credit (NCR) may be awarded. Some notes that students should be aware of:
EAR101 has a sub-minimum of 40 % in both the theory and practical examination and for each component (i.e. Geography and Geology). If you achieve at least 40 % in both these examinations, you may be allowed to sit for a supplementary examination at the start of the following year. A sub-minimum of 40 % for EAR101 is required for aggregation with GOG102.
GOG102 has a sub-minimum of 40 % for both the theory examination and coursework components; this means that if you achieve at least 40 % in both, you may be awarded a Supplementary Examination in January. To aggregate GOG 102 with EAR 101 (to make up GOG 1), a sub-minimum of 40 % for each module is required.
GOG201 and GOG202 have sub-minima of 40 % for each course component (i.e. Theory and Course Work). Supplementary examinations will only be granted for GOG201 and GOG202 if your final mark is over 40 %, AND THEN ONLY if you achieve a minimum of 40 % for BOTH the class mark AND the exam.
GOG301 and GOG302 have sub-minima of 40 % for each course component (i.e. Theory and Practical). Supplementary examinations will only be granted for GOG301 and GOG302 if your final mark is over 40%, AND THEN ONLY if you achieve a minimum of 40 % for BOTH the class mark AND the exam.
Notes:
If you fail any one component (theory examination, practical examination or course work equivalent) with a mark below the sub-minimum, your transcript will record your mark/grade as FSM (Failed Sub Minimum). This means that you cannot aggregate your marks to achieve a pass, even if your average is over 50%, and, for EAR101 or GOG102, you will not be granted a rewrite or supplementary examination.
You must achieve the sub-minimum in both your theory paper(s) and your practical paper (or coursework equivalent).
Please note that these times only apply when in-person lectures and practicals take place. Students must rely on the course material provided by the respective lecturers.
Notes:
Values in parenthesis indicate the Semester in which the module is presented.
GOG 302: Thursday practicals the 6th lecture period.
EAR101 & GOG102: Friday tuts are in the 5thperiod; you will be allocated a group.
