KEYNOTES

Professor Stiig Markager is professor at Aarhus University in marine ecology and biogeochemistry, Department of Ecoscience. He has been researching since 1985 in subjects such as aquatic plants and algae growth and ecology, light and photosynthesis and substances such as nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon turnover from the landscape, across fjords to the oceans.  He has participated in scientific expeditions from the Arctic to the Antarctic and, among other things, sailed around the world with the 3rd Galathea expedition.

For the past 20 years, much of his research has been around topics such as oxygen depletion and the environment in our fjords and the relationship to nutrients.

Helena Aronsson is a senior lecturer in plant nutrient management at the Department of soil and environment at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) with research focus on efficient nutrient cycling and reduced losses to waters. She has long-term experience of research on developing and evaluating mitigation strategies for reduced impact from agricultural fields on surface- and groundwater quality, which also includes close collaboration with stakeholders. She is also studying systems for sustainable animal production with respect to manure management and outdoor facilities, which involves horse-keeping. The results obtained have been valuable for developing good agricultural and horse-keeping practices in Sweden.
