The Playground Project: UNDER CONSTRUCTION--Starts August 12.
This project will assess playgrounds in communities around the world for safety and whether the playground promotes play and physical activity. Students work in small groups to design the ultimate playground that promotes healthy movement and social interaction.
Playgrounds (designed/constructed) are found world-wide. They provide an opportunity for young people to develop their physical, social and emotional skills through play. The question is whether the playgrounds are safe and whether the built playground is designed to promote play and the important growth opportunities good play can provide.
This is an international project designed for the participation of students (target group is 10-12 year olds). The international scope of the project enables good and bad ideas to be shared and enable the student to explore ways to improve safety and playability with students outside of their community.
There are three parts to this project:
• Part A explores playground safety and will involve the inspection and rating of a playground's safety.
• Part B will examine playability, the health benefits of play, meaning whether a playground (parts) encourage physical activity and challenge, and will also involve inspection and rating of the playgrounds ability to encourage safe, challenging and a wide variety of play opportunities.
• Part C will be where students, working in groups (with same and/or different classrooms) will work together to design and pitch their playground to the wider audience.
Time Frame:
Project Start: August 12, 2018. • Project End: November 8, 2018
Project Information will be sent under a separate cover to teachers once they have registered to participate.
