Plastic Pollution
Y8 Our Environment: Our Health -- Part One: The Research
In your project groups decide what issue your group will examine and seek a solution for.
With your issue identified, on paper (to be later entered into a Google.doc) List the following:
• Goal for project: i.e. To reduce the amount and severity of diseases and deaths
resulting from ______(type of pollution)_____ at/on _____(location)_______
• Names and email numbers for group members.
• State the Problem:
- Who are people getting sick?
- What at the people doing when becoming sick?
- What type of pollution is causing people to become sick?
- Where is this this pollution occurring?
- Why is this pollution occurring?
- When is the pollution occurring?
- How is this pollution making people sick?
• Using websites such as: https://www.health.govt.nz/our-work/environmental-health
https://www.cph.co.nz/your-health/infectious-diseases/
https://surv.esr.cri.nz/
+ List the type of illness/deaths
+ List the number of illnesses/deaths per year (Use NZ statistics only)
Enter this information into a Google.doc for your group. Label the Doc CLASS AND TOPIC. Share the document with your group members and Mr Wood gwood@rosmini.school.nz.
When you build your document use Arial Font. Size 12. Do not add colour, highlights, italics, etc. Keep this document clean and simple. We can ‘jazz’ it up later.
[Mr. Wood will link your document with the other documents from this class and other year 8 classes within the Y8 Our Environment: Our Health Webpage.]
Continue to add to the information on your document so as to build a good understanding of the PROBLEM
In class, your teacher will then help you identify the key problem that might be something your group might try and solve. You are not going to be able to build roads and bridges, but you might be able to influence the behaviour of people who cross the road without looking, or you use cell phones when driving. Your group will continue to work on their document from school and home and also be able to see what other groups are doing.
Make sure that each contribution you make on the document has your name at the end so we can identify who in the group is contributing and who is not. Show as follows (John Bell)
After you have come to agreement on what solution might work, we want you to try the idea out and find out how it works and get some feedback. Presentation of your group’s project will take place at the end of November. The presentation will consist of a max of 5 slides (Google slides). 1. Title page and group members; 2. Statement of the Problem and how big the problem is; 3. Solution and Why you chose that solution; 4. What you did to test your solution and 5. The Result and conclusion.

Now that you have your solution to the problem, the task now becomes one of marketing / selling your idea to your audience (i.e. the people who can possibly make the change -- you have to convince them to change.
Your group may any method/media it wants to sell your idea, BUT it must have a written/pictoral form in English and one in the language other than English your group selected.
Due Date: No later than November 19.
