Mathematics
What will I learn?
GCSE Maths builds upon all previous learning and incorporates the skills of reasoning and problem solving. The syllabus is based upon conceptual understanding and mathematical fluency. Maths lessons will establish a stimulating environment for students which provides challenge for all, whilst building your mathematical confidence.
The 6 topic areas which are covered at GCSE are:
Number
Algebra
Ratio, proportion and rates of changes
Geometry and measures
Probability
Statistics
Maths is an interconnected subject in which students will be able to move fluently between different representations of mathematical ideas.
GCSE Maths prepares you for the skills you will need in everyday life and supports the work that you do in other subjects. Most college and Sixth Form courses require maths as an entry requirement, as do many jobs and careers.
Assessment
The examination consists of three papers (one non-calculator paper and two calculator papers, 1hr 30 mins each) covering all areas of the syllabus.
There are 2 tiers of entry for GCSE Maths.
Foundation tier – will assess grades 1-5
Higher tier – will assess grade 4-9
Students will need to resit their Maths GCSE should they achieve less than a Grade 4.
The GCSE Mathematics examination is linear, meaning that the three papers are sat at the end of the course in May/June, at the end of Year 11.
Equipment
Students are required to be confident in using mathematical equipment therefore we expect students to come to every maths lesson with the following:
Scientific calculator (we recommend the Casio FX-85GTX)
Pencil
Ruler
Pair of compasses
Protractor
Exam Board
Edexcel for both tiers.
