To strengthen students’ character growth by helping them solve everyday challenges at home, at school, and in the future.
Beliefs
1. Students can bring any life issue to school for support; every student has an advocate in the school counselor.
2. All students have the right to be heard, respected and included. Students have the right to learn and will learn when given the right support.
3. Nurturing all students’ social and emotional well-being will encourage academic development and future success.
4.. All students benefit from a strong home/school/community partnership.
From the handbook
Social and emotional health are an integral part of the Richard McKenna school experience. That is why we have a counselor that is available to the Richard McKenna community.
Montessori Services:
Counseling is provided by the school counselor in a variety of ways.
Large group lessons:
The school counselor visits the classroom several times a month and delivers a lesson on a variety of topics which address personal, social, academic or career needs.
Small group lessons:
Sometimes students will benefit from extra lessons on a particular subject. These lessons will be held once a week for 6 weeks during lunch and recess time. Parents will be given the opportunity to opt out of these lessons, but it is hoped that they allow their child to participate in the group.
Individual sessions:
Students can see the counselor for individual counseling sessions from either personal, teacher, or parent referral.
Conflict Resolution:
Sometimes students don’t get along with one another. Conflict resolution allows students to practice the skill of “talk it out” so they can share their feelings. This gives both parties the opportunity to talk and listen to one another.
