Parenting Tips and Guides

During this time you are balancing children returning to school and changes that may be happening at home and/or work. The continued uncertainty has made it difficult to plan and adjust. Our children are now experiencing return to school and changes due to covid-19. They are adapting to spending time in bigger groups and extended time out of home. Along with parents feeling the stress with these changes our children are also experiencing worry and uncertainty. Included are some tips on initiating conversation re: COVID-19 with your child and how you can better support them as they transition back into the classroom. Also important will be to develop healthy routines and expectations for home and school to help create structure for you and your family.

As a parent you are trying to balance work, child care, navigating new technology as well as supporting your child with changes in school and tending to their mental health needs. Allow time for yourself as a parent to take care of yourself by practicing self care and encouraging your child to do the same. Give yourself grace and know you are not alone!

Supporting Your Childs Return to School

  • Assess what your child understand about returning to school and covid procedures. Review what has changed and what they can expect.

  • Be Honest and Open with your child. Using child friendly language keep your child updated on potential changes or expectations for school.

  • Continue with a structured routine. Our kids thrive when they have structure. Create morning and afternoon routines outside of school.

  • Ask about Concerns and Fears. Encourage your child to share feelings they are experiencing. Remember to validate their feelings and experiences.

  • Provide Opportunities to have Control. As we transition and change your child may feel things are out of control. Provide opportunities where you child can have choices.
