Caribou is an international online math competition that is held 6 times annually. Students can participate in 7 grade levels (K-1, 2, 3-4, 7-8, 9-10, and 11-12). They offer 3 different types of contests: Math, Coding and Calcrostic. Their mission is to make math fun and they offer extensive programming and competitions in numerous languages. Their fall contest is FREE for everyone, in any grade.
River Edge participated in Caribou as a pilot during 2024-2025 with 1st grade only, as kindergartners do not yet possess sufficient keyboard and computer skills to make this a viable option. After the pilot this year, we will NOT be participating as a district in the 2025-2026 school year. However, I did find their questions, site and games to be engaging and worthwhile.
Parents and students are encouraged to investigate Caribou further if they wish to pursue additional challenge opportunities together. They offer many practice tests from previous years and online games to gain experience on their interactive questions, of which there is always on per math contest. Please scroll down to the site link below and explore their offerings.
Caribou offers sample contests and free games on their site as well as much information about their organization and philosophy.
