At Risca Primary, our curriculum is designed to help every child develop the knowledge, skills and experiences they need to succeed, following the Curriculum for Wales.

📚A Froebelian Approach Learning

At Risca Primary, we provide exciting and meaningful learning experiences that help children develop the skills, knowledge and confidence they need for life in Wales and the wider world. Our curriculum gives pupils opportunities to take part in real-life, engaging activities that are relevant to their age and stage. This helps them become more independent learners, able to use and apply their skills in different situations.

Our approach is inspired by the Froebelian philosophy and guided by the Curriculum for Wales. We believe children learn best through play, exploration and real-life experiences, helping them grow in confidence, creativity and independence.

Our holistic approach in Early Years and Progression Step 2 (Reception to Year 2) supports creativity, curiosity and strong community links.

Key features of our approach include:
🔑 Learning through Nature – exploring and learning outdoors
🔑 Hands-on experiences – using materials like blocks, clay, woodwork, gardening and other practical activities
🔑 The Enabling Adult – supporting children with guidance and encouragement

This approach continues across the rest of the school through classroom learning and environments, outdoor activities, and our Feel Good Friday sessions, including cookery, cooking, gardening, woodwork, and other fun, practical activities.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿Bilingualism

At Risca Primary, we are proud to promote the Welsh language and support the Welsh Government’s aim of reaching one million Welsh speakers by 2050. We help our pupils develop their Welsh reading, writing and speaking skills in both formal lessons and everyday situations, while celebrating our Welsh heritage and culture.

Welsh is part of daily life at Risca Primary. Staff and pupils use familiar Welsh words and phrases in classrooms and around the school. You will also see Welsh used in signs, displays and school information. Our learning areas are labelled with age-appropriate Welsh language to support children as they practise and build their skills each day.

We are proud to have achieved the Cymraeg Campus Bronze Award, and we are continuing to develop our Welsh provision as we work towards the Silver Award.

😀Health and Wellbeing

At Risca Primary, Health and Wellbeing is at the heart of everything we do. We are a caring and supportive school, providing children with experiences that help them grow emotionally, socially and physically. Strong relationships between staff and pupils help everyone feel valued, safe and confident.

We listen to our pupils and value their opinions, giving them a voice through our Pupil Voice Groups. This helps children feel involved in decisions about their school and supports a positive, welcoming environment for everyone.

At Risca Primary, we aim to create a nurturing environment where children can thrive, feel supported and enjoy learning every day.
