Zoom link for tonight's 6pm class can be found here. If you are prompted for a passcode, it is 105838.
Zoom recording of the class can be found here.
Read/watch for class:
Watch the film Glory. It is available on Amazon Prime; if you don't have access to Amazon Prime, let Mark know, and he can get a DVD to you.
Read: Stephen Crane, “The Veteran”
Read: Lucas Pralle, "Veterans' Day 2020: A Reflection."
Prepare/organize for class:
For the Crane story: Who is the veteran? Do a character analysis – how does he act? What do you know about him, and how?
For Glory: In the film, how and why do some of the characters in the 54th change? Think in particular of Col. Shaw, Major Cabot Forbes, Pvt. Trip (Denzel Washington), and Cp. Thomas Searles (Shaw’s black childhood friend). When you were in the service, did you ever see people changes in these ways? Did you?
Why does Pvt. Trip refuse to carry the regimental colors, when he is first asked by Col. Shaw? Why does he later choose to do so?
When the soldiers of the 54th learn that they will be executed if captured by Confederate forces, Shaw assumes they will all seek discharges. None of them do. Why, do you think?
Is Col. Shaw a good leader?
For Lucas Pralle's Blog Post:
Has your identity as a veteran changed over the years? If it has, why?
