Why did the Civil War happen? According to Manning, how did northern whites see it? Southern whites? Blacks? Lincoln?
Frederick Douglass argues that, at the very least, patriotism creates a moral dilemma for black Americans in his day. Why? Is this still true, for black Americans in 2021?
