Description: The ELL population in Rush-Henrietta has more than doubled in the past 14 years, growing from 144 ELLs in 2004 to over 340 ELLs in 2019. While our students represent more than 40 languages spoken, our most common languages are Arabic, Nepali, and Chinese. Did you know that our "Nepali" students are not actually Nepalis, but rather, Bhutanese refugees of Nepali ancestry? In 2015, the city of Rochester accepted more than 5,000 Bhutanese Nepali speaking refugees. In the past 3 years, this population has moved into our district and is quickly replacing Arabic with Nepali as the most common language among our ELLs. Who are these Bhutanese refugees? What makes their culture unique? What do I need to understand as an educator? How might their experiences affect their education?

Description: For the past 2 years, the world has been experiencing the collective trauma of the COVID-19 pandemic. Some of our English Language Learners and their families were already dealing with traumatic experiences before the pandemic, and this has added additional stressors. In this online professional development, we will explore the different types of trauma your ELLs may have experienced as well as possible strategies for supporting them in a culturally responsive manner at school.
This online course was developed by Jamie Scripps (District ENL TOSA), Dr. Diane M. Wynne (Director of Wellness and Equity) and in collaboration with Jennifer Raponi from Midwest RBERN. It consists of 5 short videos, each followed with multiple choice and short answer questions on a Google Form.
