Security Precautions

Anti Virus Software

Anti-Virus Software is the most common method to prevent and remove viruses. However it is definitely of a case that prevention is better than cure. It is much more efficient to prevent viruses rather than remove them.

Anti-virus software has a list of virus definitions that it uses to detect viruses, this means it essentially contains virus code – these are known as virus definitions. It will scan the files, emails and connections of a computer and compare what it finds with what it knows a virus ‘looks’ like. It is important that these libraries of virus definitions are current and up to date!

How to limit exposure to viruses

There are a number of methods that you can use to limit the risk of viruses:

  • Don’t install any software that is not from a trusted file
  • Do not open any attachments from unknown sources/suspicious attachments
  • Scan any external storage devices such as USB Flash drives.
  • Ensure that you have up to date anti-virus software installed
