Year 8 Languages offers a 1 semester compulsory course, or 1 year specialist course within 1 of our languages: French, German and Japanese. A focus on understanding and communication across various topics forms this course, with students developing dispositions in intercultural understanding and global citizenship.
The Year 8 courses allow students to develop the basic language skills in 1 of our languages: French, German and Japanese. Students may cover topics such as greetings, introductions, questioning, time, travel, food, family, animals and culture as well as learning the written and grammatical features of each language while developing their knowledge of basic vocabulary and communicative skills.
Students are assessed through the specific Achievement Standards of the Australian Curriculum on both the receptive (listening and reading) and productive (writing and speaking) skills of their language and complete a variety of cultural learning tasks.
There may be a cost throughout the year for optional activities and opportunities that align with the Learning and Assessment Plan.
No prior experience in the language is required.
The Year 8 Specialist Language course allows students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a new language or continue in the study of the same language for 1 year. It is recommended for students who are interested in continuing language study beyond Year 8. Students may cover topics such as greetings and questioning, time, the calendar, family, animals, food, travel and culture as well as learning the written and grammatical features of each language.
Students are assessed through the specific Achievement Standards of the Australian Curriculum on both the receptive (listening and reading) and productive (writing and speaking) skills of their language and complete a variety of cultural learning tasks.
Recommended for:
- students wishing to continue on from their Year 7 language course
- students wishing to continue language study at Year 8 and beyond
- students interested in our International program and/or becoming an International Ambassador.
Students are able to further develop their language proficiency through collaboration with students from our International partnership schools.
