Year 10 Vocational Education Programs Overview

Students may select 1 or 2 of the following semester-long subjects as a prerequisite to their future career pathway. Each selection must be on a separate application form which includes a written personal statement. Pre-Voc subjects provide a pathway and may assist in students' eligibility to enrol in Year 11 and 12 Flexible Industry Pathway (FIP) courses.

Pre-Voc - Automotive Pathway / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

This course introduces students to the basics of working as an automotive mechanic. Students will explore a range of careers related to the automotive industry and be exposed to competency-based learning. This course is designed as a prerequisite for students who want to continue training in FIP/VET Automotive in Year 11.

Assessment

Workplace Practices Stage 1.
30 hours of work experience.

Additional Details

A sound knowledge of Year 9 Mathematics is required.
A written personal statement application is required.
Subject fee: $50. This contributes to personal protective equipment, consumable materials, excursion to MTA (transport)
SACE Credits: 10 (Stage 1 SACE).

Pre-Voc - Construction Pathway / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

This course introduces students to the basics of working in the construction industry. Students will explore a range of careers related to the construction industry and be exposed to competency-based learning. This course is designed as a prerequisite for students who want to continue training in FIP/VET Construction in Year 11.

Assessment

Workplace Practices Stage 1.
30 hours of work experience.

Additional Details

Subject fee: $50. This contributes to personal protective equipment, consumable materials such as timber, partial cost of subsidised white card training.

Pre-Voc - Cookery (Certificate l Hospitality) / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

This course introduces students to the basics of working in the commercial cookery industry. It is well suited for students who are considering café or restaurant work. Students will explore a range of careers related to the cookery/café industry and be exposed to competency-based learning. The focus is on preparation and service of café-style food and coffee and includes theory modules and kitchen practical sessions in the VET kitchen, including the running of a café day towards the end of the course. This course is designed as a prerequisite for students who want to continue training in Certificate ll Cookery or a school-based apprenticeship in Commercial Cookery.

Assessment

VET competency-based assessment: theory and practical
group collaboration tasks.

Additional Details

A written personal statement application is required.
2-day barista training is required as part of this course.
Subject fee: $120. This contributes to consumables such as food ingredients, specialist equipment and barista training.
SACE Credits: 10 (Stage 1 SACE).

Pre-Voc - Digital Media (Game Programming Foundations)/ Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

This course is open to Year 10 students who have an interest in moving into the digital media industry. The 2 largest areas for this are game programming and game art and animation. The Game Programming Foundations course is run with a focus on the development of programming language and technical skills to create 2D games, using industry-standard software. Upon successful completion you will have the skills, experience and confidence to demonstrate how to use a game development framework and programming language.

Integrated Learning Stage 1.

Subject fee: $50. This contributes to consumable materials and site licence fees.
SACE Credits: 10 (Stage 1 SACE).

Pre-Voc - Early Childhood Education / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

This course will be delivered as a timetabled subject on a line. It is intended as an introduction to the vocational expectations for students who are thinking about working in the childhood sector and will include: the role of play for children, health and safety in the workplace, communicating effectively with children, communication and client service in the workplace, individual and group tasks.

Assessment

Integrated Learning Stage 1.

Subject fee: $30. This contributes to consumable materials for specialised projects.
SACE Credits: 10 (Stage 1 SACE).

Pre-Voc - Hairdressing / Length: 1 Semester

Course Content

This course will be delivered as a timetabled subject in the REC hair salon. The course is intended as an introduction to the vocational expectations for students who are thinking about working in the hairdressing and beauty sector and will include: hair styling, basin services (shampoo and massage), hair colouring, makeup, communication and client service in the workplace, individual and group tasks.

Assessment

Integrated Learning Stage 1.

participation in a hair and beauty 'runway show'.

Additional Details

A written personal statement application, including commitment to pay will be required before commencing the course.
Subject fee: $100. This contributes to consumable materials such as hair dye, shampoos/conditioners, makeup and brushes.
SACE Credits: 10 (Stage 1 SACE).
