Year 11 elective languages are all full year courses, with scholarships available to participate in international travel opportunities to partnership schools. The Beginners Language course is an intensive introduction designed as a 2 year program for students who wish to begin their study of the language at senior secondary level. Prior experience and successful completion in the selected language is a requirement for the Continuers course.
Students develop the skills of listening, speaking, reading, writing and information and communication technologies within prescribed themes and topics: the personal world and the French-speaking communities. There are 3 themes: relationships, lifestyles and experiences. Students study topics that provide the contexts for a range of assessments such as interacting, creating texts and interpreting texts.
Students will complete a range of learning tasks from the following:
assessment Type 1: interaction
assessment Type 2: text production
assessment Type 3: text analysis.
This is a full year course. Students enrolling in Stage 1 Beginners at Year 11 cannot:
- have studied French in Year 9/10
- have spent more than 3 months living in a French-speaking country
- be of French-speaking family background.
SACE credits: 20 (Stage 1 SACE).
This course is organised around 3 themes: the individual, the French-speaking communities and the changing world, with a number of set topics and subtopics. Students develop skills to communicate meaningfully with people across cultures, are given opportunities to develop knowledge, awareness and understanding of other languages and cultures in relation to their own, and reflect on their own attitudes, beliefs and values to develop an understanding of how culture and identity are expressed through language.
Students will complete a range of learning tasks from the following:
assessment Type 1: interaction
assessment Type 2: text production
assessment Type 3: text analysis
assessment Type 4: investigation.
This course is a full year of study and is designed for students who have already undertaken learning of their chosen language from Year 8.
Students must have successfully completed Year 10 French.
