48224 SS_eLearning: Increasing Engagement in the Classroom - Student Discourse (Summer 2023)
Course Description: This professional learning experience will help participants to develop student activities that center on discourse in the classroom. This PLE fosters student growth in the “Four C’s” – with a focus on communication in the classroom. Teachers will be introduced to different discussion protocols from the Harvard Graduate School of Education Teaching & Learning Lab and will develop an activity based on a goal – do you want students to brainstorm new ideas? Do you want full-class participation? A focus on understanding different perspectives? Or data-driven discussion? These discussion techniques are versatile and can be easily adapted to fit whatever content you are teaching at the time! You will be introduced to five discussion protocols in this session and strategies on how to create a rubric, you will choose one and create an activity. You will share the activity with the others in the PLE, give feedback, and discuss your planned implementation. You will earn 5 credit hours during this PLE when you complete the tasks and will also learn new ideas and tools to maximize student achievement! Come and join us!

38003 SS_eLearning: InquirEd Introduction
Course Description: Social Studies Teachers will develop their understanding of the inquiry process used in Inquiry Journeys. Teachers explore their first Inquiry: its overview, modules, lesson, and lesson strategies. Teachers learn about the resources available and how they can easily access them. The inquiry process is at the heart of the instruction used in Inquiry Journeys; it’s present in every lesson, assessment, and task. This online, do-at-your-own-pace course, is being offered to help teachers, and staff understands the ends and outs of this new social studies curriculum. In order to receive the 6 credits, participants must engage in the learning, respond to the questions and ideas of the other participants, and complete tasks outside their regularly scheduled work time.

Course Description: Participants in this professional learning opportunity will engage with social studies practices (From the New York Social Studies Framework) and explore their connection to social studies content. There are five Social Studies Practices (Gathering, Interpreting, and Using Evidence; Chronological Reasoning and Causation; Comparision and Contextualization; Geographic Reasoning; Economics and Economic Systems; Civic Participation). As the Social Studies Framework informs WHAT we teach in our social studies classes, the social studies practices inform HOW these should be taught. During this professional learning opportunity, participants will analyze several examples of the practices at their grade level, discuss how they connect with the content they teach, and plan how to actualize the practices with engaging instruction. In addition, connections to how the practices actualize themselves on the Global and US History Regents will be discussed. As this course is one three-hour session, participants must attend the entire course for full credit.

48306 SS_The Updated Antiracist Curriculum Project Series (Summer 2023)
Course Description: The Antiracist Curriculum Project is always updated and evolving as new resources are added. This learning is a must-have experience for anyone working in the RCSD schools. The lessons are great for students as well. The instructors will take teachers and staff through three of the created Anti-Racist Curriculum Project Units/lessons. The units have specific grade levels as a point of discussion but all of them can be modified plus or minus a grade level when using them with our scholars. Even if you don’t always work directly with students, these modules are important learning with regard to how and why our district has historically struggled in comparison to the suburban districts surrounding us. Each professional learning session concludes with restorative circles that provide space for participants to unpack the inquiry questions given using primary sources. The three antiracist summer professional learning series will include:
1) Enslavement in NYS Units (August 2nd From 2-4pm) Grade focus – 4th, 7th, 11th grades as well as adults. Participants analyze and interact with days 1-4 within the inquiry unit on enslavement in NYS. This will challenge participants’ assumptions about Africa and introduce the SS practice: Geographic Reasoning as they explore several images that show the richness and diversity of the African continent. Black history doesn’t begin with enslavement. Teachers engage in a gallery walk that introduces a number of primary sources that tell us about enslavement in NYS, they learn key shifts in vocabulary and are introduced to two adapted excerpts from Sojourner Truth’s and Austin Steward’s autobiographies about being enslaved in NYS and fighting for freedom. They will investigate the main idea, credibility, purpose, and context of the sources. Participants explore how this is different from what and how they were taught about enslavement when they grew up. 2) Redlining and Civil Rights (August 9th From 2-4pm) Grade focus - 4th, 8th, 12th grades as well as adults. Participants explore how racism has impacted the Greater Rochester area, dive into vocabulary shifts, and investigate primary sources while engaging in restorative circles. They will walk away with an understanding of how to empower students to take action about problems in their community, and how to respond to concerns. 3) LatinX Civil Rights in Rochester (August 16th From 2-4 pm) Grade Focus – 4th as well as adults. Participants investigate Latinx experiences with civil rights in Rochester. Past and present. They will analyze primary sources, and work in groups and independently to hear and discuss local voices as they share their stories. In order to receive all 6 credits, you must attend all 3 sessions. However, you may receive two credits per session as well.
