ELL_miVision: Oracy in the Bilingual Early Childhood Classroom

Course Description: Bilingual teachers will engage with myView and miVisión resources that facilitate oral language development in both English and Spanish. They will be able to draw connections between NYSED Bilingual Progressions and myView/miVisión guidance. Bilingual teachers will be able to articulate how NYS assesses oral language development in second language learners.
Target Audience: ELL K-2 bilingual teachers and ENL from bilingual elementary buildings (Schools 9, 12, 17, 22, 28, 33, and 35)
Outcomes: Participants will be able to make cross-language connections between miVisión and myView in my bilingual classroom.

ELL_miVision: K-2 Foundational Skills Summer 2021
Course Description: Bilingual miVisión teachers will explore a week of foundational skill instruction. Spanish foundational skill will be modeled and teachers will dissect the opportunties for scaffolding instruction, and small group support.
Target Audience: ELL K-2 bilingual teachers and ENL from bilingual elementary buildings (Schools 9, 12, 17, 22, 28, 33, and 35)
Outcomes: Participants will be able to deliver foundational skills lessons using all of the available tools and resources in the miVisión program.

Course Description: Bilingual teachers develop a coherent dual language implementation plan for the MyView/MiVision reading series that is aligned to a balanced literacy approach as outlined in the RCSD Bilingual Language Allocation Plan

Outcomes: Participants will be able to facilitate complete coverage of literacy standards in both the English and Spanish language.

ELL_Monitoring Trajectories for Biliteracy in Reading and Writing Summer 2021
Course Description: This 6 hour professional development is an extension of Intro to Biliteracy from the Start, a prerequisite course. This Part 2 will focus on Holistic Bilingualism as a contrast to Parallel Monolingualism and how the measurement tools used both in reading and writing could aid us in understanding more precisely the relationship between Spanish and English Literacy. This course is for participants that have taken one of the following: ELL_Biliteracy From the Start(36008) , ELL_Introduction to Biliteracy from the Start(35343) or Biliteracy from the Start(24756).
Target Audience: ELL K-6 Bilingual & ENL Teachers from bilingual elementary buildings (Schools 9, 12, 17, 22, 28, 33, and 35)
Outcomes: Participants will be able to use the concept of holistic bilingualism in Literacy Squared to examine the biliteracy development of Spanish- English emerging bilingual children in the elementary grades. Participants will be able to conceptualize a trajectory towards biliteracy by exploring how holistic bilingual reading and writing assessments inform instruction.

ELL_Creating Comprehensive Biliteracy Lessons Summer 2021
Course Description: This 6 hour professional development is an extention of Intro to Biliteracy from the Start, a prerequisite course. This Part 3 will focus on putting it all together to design biliterate lessons and unit plans by connecting both Spanish and English Language environments. Participants will plan lessons that incroporate the "within and across" language connections between oracy, reading, writing and metalanguage utilizing some of the strategies and methods discussed and presented during the first prerequisite course. The prerequisitie for this course is Course # 36373.
Target Audience: ELL K-6 Bilingual & ENL Teachers from bilingual elementary buildings (Schools 9, 12, 17, 22, 28, 33, and 35)
Outcomes: Participants will be able to plan holistic biliteracy lessons that connect both Spanish and English literacy environments in a meaningful and purposeful way.

ELL_WL Revised Standards – SOMOS 1- Getting it Done Summer 2021
Course Description: This course is designed for World Language Teachers Only. In these sessions, WL teachers will unpack the SOMOS curriculum for next year. This curriculum supports teachers in communicating with their students in comprehensible input every day in class. Our brains are absolutely incredible and they are designed for language acquisition. After four decades of research in the area of second language acquisition, it is clear that language is acquired not from practice (drills), but from consistent and constant exposure to input. Input is indispensable to language acquisition. **This course is NOT eligible for PDI.
Target Audience: ELL World Languages teachers only
Outcomes: WL teachers will be familiar with the SOMOS curriculum and resources and will know how to find materials to support different learning strategies. Teachers will practice and acquire basic skills to use Teaching proficiency Through Reading and Story Telling to provide lessons rich in comprehensible input for second language acquisition.
