CSD_An Introduction to Community Engagement

Course Description: This professional learning experience will give participants an introduction to Community Engagement. Participants will learn the different components of community engagement and the importance of civic engagement. This course will lay the foundation for Community Asset Mapping.

Target Audience: All

Course Description: This professional learning experience is part one of a series on Asset Mapping. Participants must complete this course before advancing to Asset Mapping II-IV. Each course will scaffold.

CSD_Community Engagement: Asset Mapping II

Course Description: This professional learning experience is part two of a series on Asset Mapping. Participants will take the skills they learned from Asset Mapping I to work in teams to identify the needs of students. They will then complete an independent student asset map. The goal is for educators to see the rich resources that are in Rochester. Participants must complete this course before advancing to Asset Mapping III-IV. Each course will scaffold.

CSD_Community Engagement: Asset Mapping III

Course Description: This professional learning experience is part three of a series on Asset Mapping. Participants will take the skills they learned from Asset Mapping I and II to connect with the assets they identified in their sample student’s community. We will begin process of designing a map in Google My Maps. Participants will be able to engage with community leaders through a panel discussion on the importance of identifying the assets in our community. Participants must complete this course before advancing to Asset Mapping IV. Each course will scaffold.

Course Description: This professional learning experience will dig deep into Community School Pillar 3 - Active Family and Community Engagement. Educators will learn that engagement happens on a continuum – from partnering with parents to develop and promote a vision for student success, to offering courses, activities, and services for parents and community members, to creating structures and opportunities for shared leaderships. Participants will also understand the difference between involvement and engagement.

CSD_The Power of Partnerships that Lead to Student Success

Course Description: This professional learning experience will dig deep into Community School Pillar 4 – Collaborative Leadership and Practices, which provides the relational “glue” that connects and reinforces all community school pillars. Participants will learn about strategic and community partnerships and how when they work together effectively, lead to student success. Educators will talk with community based organizations and community leaders about the impact of collaborative leadership and practices. Additionally, participants will learn about Community Engagement Teams.

CSD_The Whole Child Approach

Course Description: Community Schools take a “whole-child” approach to supporting students’ educational and life success. This means that they pay explicit attention to students’ social and emotional development as well as their academic learning, recognizing that they are intertwined and mutuall reinforcing. This professional learning experience will teach participants all the components of Community School Pillar 1: Integrated Student Supports

ELL_Bridging Where They Are and What They Need Summer 2021

Course Description: Teachers, participating in this collegial circle will evaluate the components of the book, Bridging Where They Are and What They Need-in order to gain a better understanding of ELL - SIFE students (Students with Inconsistent/Interrupted Formal Education). Increasing our understanding of SIFE needs will allow for a collaborative effort to design an approach to best assist SIFE students emotionally, socially, linguistically, and academically. This collegial learning circle will explore how to build language skills at the same time that they are teaching new content. Specific skills that teachers will develop are: how to craft lessons that ELLs can learn the first time they are taught, checking for understanding throughout a lesson, embed vocabulary instruction across the curriculum, address listening, speaking, reading and writing in all lessons. This is a 5 week collegial circle for a total of 10 hours with no Zoom meetings. We will read a chapter each week and submit a reflection along with participating in a weekly discussion board through padlet. It will function much like an eLearning course but also allow for online community building. Upon registering, we will send you the information for our google classroom and discussion boards. Participants will need to register for all sections of the course to receive credit.

Target Audience: All

Outcomes: Participants will be able to create effective lessons for SIFE students by using instructional strategies that address students' needs. Having obtained deeper knowledge of SIFE, administrators can create programs and teachers can design lessons that are appropriate for this ELL group. ELL_Content Lesson Design for SIFE

Summer 2021

Course Description: Teachers participating in this online course will learn about the characteristics of SIFE, and how to plan/adapt content lessons for Students with Interrupted or Inconsistent Formal Education, using the Mutually Adaptive Learning Paradigm (MALP). This will most benefit general education/content teachers. There will be time for practical application during our2 hour course work. The PD runs through Google Classroom and doesn't require any Zoom meetings. It will run much like an eLearning course. Once you are registered, we will send you the code to our classroom and instructions

Outcomes: Participants will be able to better support the Socio-emotional growth of ELL-SIFE students by teacher observations, evidence in assessments, projects (PBL), MALP lesson plans and other work produced by SIFE. ELL_Dynamic Bilingualism in the Content Areas Summer 2021

Course Description: This course will focus on the concept of translanguaging and its role in all classrooms (bilingual, ENL or English-medium content classes). Participants will use the CUNY NYSIEB resources to explore a variety of translanguaging strategies and identify strategies that align with their content area. Participants will review and analyze their own instruction to identify spaces for translanguaging and will create a lesson plan that includes one or more of the translanguaging strategies discussed

ELL_Language & Literacy Development Approach Extended
Series Summer 2021

Course Description: RCSD has outlined its researched based approach to language and literacy development. A Language and Literacy Development Approach (LLDA) seeks to give strategic opportunities to develop core content area knowledge, analytical practices, and discipline-specific academic uses of language in an environment that uses grade-level standards, is relevant, challenging, engages, empowers, and inspires learning every day. This professional development series will take a deep dive into the essential elements of language and literacy development as outline in the Rochester City School District. The series will include sessions on scaffolding, home and new language progressions, the advance hallmarks of literacy, translanguaging and embedded culturally relevant and best practices for Multilingual Learners. *** Participants need to sign up for all sections of this course to receive credit. ELL_The Translanguaging Classroom Summer 2021

Course Description: This PD format will be a collegial circle with a focus for teachers in grades 3-12 who work with ELLs. Participates will read, reflect and plan using the text, The Translanguaging Classroom (Garcia, Ibarra Johnson & Seltzer, 2017). Participants will develop an understanding of dynamic bilingualism, develop a translanguaging stance for their classrooms and create lessons using the translanguaging design. Implementation of the strategies will support culturally responsive teaching, highlight social and linguistic justice and enhance student engagement with a deeper understanding of the content along with the new and home languages.

Target Audience: All 3 - 12

Outcomes: Participants will be able to define translanguaging and identify my translanguaging stance. Participants will be able to use translanguaging design to plan and implement culturally and linguistically responsive lessons that engage students in a deeper understanding of content through use of home and new languages.

HPE_Introduction to Child Sex Trafficking Summer 2021

Course Description: Participants will be able to define child sex trafficking, understand the myths and misconceptions associated with child self trafficking, identify red flags and sex exploitation, recall reporting practices for suspected child trafficking, define basic human needs and identify examples of how traffickers manipulate them, identify risk factors and vulnerabilities traffickers use to target children and recognize common grooming tactics used by traffickers. Participants will be able to define trauma and the continuum of trauma, identify the impact and responses of complex trauma associated with CST and recall successful strategies for engagement with youth who have experienced trauma..

HPE_Marijuana Legalization and Considerations for Communities Summer 2021

Course Description: Examine the legalization of Marijuana and the impact on students and families. New legislation has made the realization of legalizing marijuana a reality. According to the Youth Risk behavioral survey 32% of high school students have used and 21% used it in the past month. Usage of Marijuana increased with student’s grade level and more females reported using marijuana. In order to combat future problems and work toward prevention.

Outcomes: Participants will have an awareness about how the legalization of Marijuana can impact their students and families. Participants will gain resources to help their students and families about the misuse of Marijuana and places to go for help.

LMS_Introduction to Gale Resources Summer 2021

Course Description: In this workshop, staff will learn about a new resource – Gale in Context for Educators, a suite of databases for students in K-12. We will learn about each database as well as the For Educators portion, which provides teacher tools for curation that enables educators to find and personalize digital learning content, plan learning activities that work well for remote or in-person environments and provide equity for all students. For Educators connects with Google Classroom and SeeSaw, with databases translated into 43 languages.

Course Description: In this workshop, staff will learn about the variety of digital social emotional resources available through the School Library Sytem. Participants will learn about eBooks and database resources, how to access content and share ideas for their use with students. We will talk about Cameron’s Collection from Gale as well as Rosen’s Spotlight on Social Emotional Learning.

OSI_Future City Competition
Summer 2021

Course Description: DESIGN. INNOVATE. COLLABORATE. Imagine a place where creativity and innovation are paramount. Where teachers take on the role of students, delving into hands-on STEM activities. A place where inquiry-based learning leads to real-world applications. Where like-minded educators gather to collaborate and take risks. This is Future City Competition: an immersive experience in STEM education based on a national competition for middle grade students to participate and compete in. This session is targeted to those who specifically have funding to support offering this club during after-school hours. Competition operates from September - January with the possibility of competing during the February Winter Break.

SPED_National Reading Panel: Implications for Instruction K-6 Summer 2021

Course Description: This 6 hour two part professional development will let teachers explore an introduction to the Five Pillars of high quality, evidence-based reading instruction. Information is based on the National Reading Panel Report and addresses phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

SPED_Parent Engagement in the FBA & BIP Process Summer 2021

Course Description: This 2-hour professional learning opportunity provides a brief overview of the FBA and BIP process and describes the role of the parents, families, guardians and caregivers to support students through the process. This information will help educational organization staff in presenting this information to parents and families to help build capacity in family engagement practices. Zoom link will be provided prior to the start of this course.

Target Audience: All

Outcomes: Participants will understand how to engage families in the FBA/BIP process, when and how to include them as part of the team, and how families can provide critical information to support the development and implementation of an FBA/BIP. Participants will also understand how the FBA and BIP process is part of the CSE/CPSE process and the roles that all stakeholders play as part of the FBA and BIP teams to ensure improved communication between educational organizations and families.

SSS_Restorative Practices and SEL Support for a Return to In-Person Learning Summer 2021

Course Description: Members of the RocRestorative Team will present on how Restorative Practices and Social Emotional Learning can be utilized to address the needs of students as they return to in-person learning in September, 2021. Strategies for how to address individual and collective trauma experienced by students will be discussed and resources will be developed and shared with the intention that they will be utilized by staff in schools to respond to the social emotional needs of students as well as to establish proactive; relationship building and strengthening practices that will become the foundation for responsive practices such as restorative conversations and re-engagement processes. Participants will learn the skills necessary to implement practices and utilize resources effectively.

SSS_Social Emotional Learning & Equity Summer 2021

Course Description: This PD will examine the intersectionality of social emotional learning and equity, more specifically how the lack of racial justice (i.e., racism, inequities, lack of opportunities, violence, etc.) effect our students socially emotionally and further traumatizes them. Through restorative practices we, as educators will examine how to help students identify the feelings associated with racial injustice and provide them with tools that will help them develop healthy coping skills, find their voice and promote self-love.

Course Description: Student Support Services department is offering this training to provide trauma informed practices that will help highlight social, emotional and behavioral supports to school staff

Outcomes: This PD is being offered to improve the school community’s ability to respond to and support student’s and staff’s socio-emotional needs after a trauma has occurred. This course will provide for in-depth understanding of what trauma is, the various types that exist, the emotional and physical symptoms as well as the psychological implications.
