Special Equipment Amount (SEA) Funding
The Special Equipment Amount grant has two components: SEA Per-Pupil Amount – supports the purchase of all chromebooks, iPads, software, apps and tech accessories; and SEA Claims-Based Amount – supports other non-computer based equipment, including sensory equipment, hearing support equipment, vision support equipment, personal care support equipment and physical assists support equipment.
When school teams and professional assessments determine that assistive technology is essential for a student to participate in learning tasks and demonstrate their knowledge, SERTs can apply for a SEA device on behalf of the student. The SEA process supports educators and support staff as they nurture a sense of confidence in their students to build technical capacity.
All SEA Assistive Technology requests must be completed through SEAit.
Any questions regarding the Assistive Technology SEA process can be sent to wagnerm@rcdsb.on.ca
For strategies, training, or any questions regarding assistive tech in the classroom, contact wagnerm@rcdsb.on.ca
Prepping for SEA Applications
Please review the documentation and changes to IEPs that are required with SEA applications.
Parent Consent Form for SEA Applications
Please attach the completed form to the SEA application.
School teams may send a Consent to Decline Services form home if they determine the SEA device is not being used or switching to a 1:1 Chromebook for grade 7.
Please discuss a change in equipment and/or extra training support first if the reason is due to challenges using the SEA device effectively.
A SEA CARE form can be completed each school year to allow students to use their SEA equipment at home. The decision to send SEA equipment home is made by the school team of Classroom teacher, SERT, and Principal.
Assistive Technology
Assistive Technology allows students to access the digital tools they need to support their education and individual learning styles. Assistive Technology helps students access curriculum independently by removing some barriers to learning they may otherwise experience and develop self-advocacy skills too. All students can benefit from features of assistive technology to complete tasks more efficiently but the use of assistive technology is an essential accommodation for some of our students to access the curriculum.
Check out the texthelp products available to all RCDSB staff and students: Read and Write, Snapverter, Orbit Note, & Equatio
Watch the video to see when and how students and adults are using features of Read and Write for assignments and work. Then take a look at the RW toolbars available for Google Docs, websites, and PDFs. How are they the same? How are they different?
The Student RW training document allows students to explore a variety of Read and Write features with your support. Make a copy and share with the students practicing using Read and Write. Consider the types of assignments the tools can support. Be sure to explore the same tools PDFs too.
Gives you multiple ways to demonstrate knowledge and give feedback
OrbitNote allows students to express their understanding in many flexible ways. They can type or draw their thoughts on the page, which can aid planning. Students can highlight the key points in a comprehension piece or to help with studying. Both teachers and students can use their voices to send thoughts and feedback, and finally students can add shapes and images to their work.
Check out the updated Book Creator Online that offers more than 200+ Accessibility features to allow students to create ebooks and teachers another platform to deliver instruction and assess student thinking.
