Trades Academy offers students the opportunity to do practical, hands-on learning and get credits at the same time. Students will learn useful skills to help them go on to further study or to get a job right out of school. Trades Academy is a good way to find out if you are suited to a particular industry or career path.
Trades Academy students spend one day a week based at either the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) Blenheim campus, or the Nelson Campus. Residential block courses at Whenua Iti Outdoors in Lower Moutere are also available. Transport to all training places is provided and there are no extra fees for Trades Academy students. It’s all free.

Vocational Pathway – Manufacturing and Technology
This course is for students interested in working on cars and problem solving. Students will get a real taste for the automotive industry and spend time getting their hands dirty in NMIT’s automotive workshops, learning how cars and engines work, fault-finding and what automotive engineers do in their jobs.

Vocational Pathway – Service Industries
Students in the Salon skills course will work in a fully equipped training salon at NMIT. They will learn to explore a range of trends hairstyling skills, and beauty treatments to provide service and care to clients in a salon in either the beauty or hairdressing industry. This is a practical introduction to a career that can take many forms, including having your own business one day.

Vocational Pathway – Primary Industries
Students will learn about a broad range of topics such as winemaking, apiculture, aquaculture and horticulture through hands on experiences, field trips and expert guidance, students will emerge equipped with the knowledge and experience to pursue pathways in these essential sectors.

This programme will focus onidentifying preparing for, managing and responding to risks and emergency events that can occur in an outdoor environment.

Take a journey through the cultural history of Te Tau Ihu o Te Waka-a-Māui (the Top of the South). Learn from expert tutors and kaumātua, visit and stay on marae across the region and interact with Māori business leaders of the region.
This course is designed to be experiential and active. Students will learn the importance of strong connections to cultural heritage and the value these can bring to a wide range of career paths.

Coonect to nature while developing your outdoor adventure skills on our local national parks, learning about conservation and biodiversity management to protect these taonga.

Vocational Pathway - Social and Community Services
This popular course is for students interested in career paths such as the Defence Force, Paramedic, Police, Search and Rescue, Fire Service or Civil Defence. Students will experience a simulated search and rescue exercise, help rescue a marine vessel in trouble, find out what it is really like to be a Paramedic or a Firefighter, or explore the options available within the Army, Navy and Air Force. Learning is practical, active and engaging.

Vocational Pathway – Service Industries
Get outdoors, get active and have fun while you learn in the Trades Academy Adventure Tourism Leadership programme. This course provides the opportunity to experience high ropes, low ropes, mountain biking, caving, sea kayaking, rock climbing and camping. Challenging personal boundaries and training to work in difficult situations will also teach students valuable life skills. The Level 3 course builds on existing outdoor skills with a focus on leading groups in the outdoors.
